New issue up and running!
Tuesday, June 5th, 2012Dear Readers,
Thank you again for all your messages in response to our “Special Update” about the earthquake. The earth is still trembling from time to time in Venice but, as I already reported, there is no risk. Today is a mourning day, though, because of the funerals for victims near the epicentre — Ferrara and Modena, 200 kms to the south, where strong aftershocks of magnitude 5.1 were felt yesterday evening and this morning.
It bears repeating that there are lessons to be learnt. If the seismic map of Italy has been reconfigured, it provides additional reasons to protect our architectural environment and ensure proper building construction. Venice, which in theory could be considered safe because it is built on flexible wooden foundations, could, in practice, be in danger because of the lack of building maintenance. It is a more serious and immediate issue than the risks from “acqua alta” or “sinking” that are so widely promoted. My long-standing feeling and fear is that Venice may end up sinking in its own words when action is required.
Thank you for your friendship, and for your affection for this fragile city, which seems so permanently hard to manage.
