100 percent more???

The calculation of the tourism presence in Venice are always a good exercise. If it's true that the presences doubled in comparison with last year's, then one could wonder how everyone is complaining about the general reduced revenues, the desertification of some areas of the city; one could not understand why hotels (even the luxury ones) are suffering from the economic crisis, and firing their workers (like Starwood hotels: see our newsletter). The point is that the daily tourists build up numbers but do not "bring in" money: they do not stay overnight, they eat mostly home-made sandwiches, they do not even wear masks (homemade or not) but are deeply in the "tradition" of going to Venice to watch others having fun: shooting pictures, standing and walking for hours, most of them get cold and bored, in the end. But they won't admit it. If all the daily tourists would be actively and cheerfully contributing to the Carnival spirit, this would be already a good step forward.
