What a wonderful account of your winter trip to Venice. I have been just once and have been planning a trip back ever since. I will show this to my husband and maybe convince him to try Venice in winter. You are lucky to be so much closer than we are in the US. You visit just as we do, walking, eating, drinking, looking, just feeling lucky to be there.

Like Rosemary I love Venice - BUT, as I read that carneval this year was visited by fewer people than the year before, I thought a lot of people might feel like I do about the expressions of the mayor.
Every time I read his statements I feel that he doesn't really like tourists.
I feel very discriminated by paying more for transport i.e. than residents, just to mention one thing. I do not know if any other city has boats/busses/trains reservated for own residents. We always used to stay in hotels in Venice for a week, but it is getting more and more expensive to live there.
Maybe the Mayor only wants the very rich to come. As a result of that I think that the town also becomes more expensive for the residents which will make more people move to the mainland, and also it may produce more one-day tourists and less overnight-tourists - and a very dead town at night.
I do hope to come back one day, but at the moment I don't feel very welcomed.
Best regards
