I am taking no position on the merits of Ms. Hai’s comments about gondoliers, but I would like to note that I was in Venice for a week in May 2007 and took several photos of gondoliers on their cell phones while they are also in motion with clients in their gondolas. I took the photos only because they were amusing and ironical, but it now appears they are pertinent to this discussion. Alys Briggs

I am writing from Venice towards the end of a six week stay, which we have thoroughly enjoyed, but for one thing. When are the city authorities going to enforce the law regarding dogs fouling the pavements? The number of dogs seem to be increasing and so do the number of “heaps” that are left. It really spoils your beautiful city.

Another disappointment - the only church which I found closed all the time, so was unable to visit, was the English Church. Dont try to visit it folks, except at service times!!

I was quite unhappily surprised to see that the vaporetti will now be serving the “public” differently, depending upon where they are from!! There is no other city in the world which gives preference, on modes of public transportation, for local residents over everyone else!! Do you think that New York taxis chose New York residents over tourists or that the London Tube asks for a local ID before it lets you board the Tube ahead of others?! Of course not! If you buy a pass, you get to ride the train….if you pay the fare, you get to ride the taxi….allowing someone that spends the exact same amount (or even less) on a ticket to board the boat ahead of others that paid for a ticket is RIDICULOUS!! It is patently unfair! I would reconsider “slighting” the tourists, since they provide ALOT of revenue to the fair city of Venice!
Thanks for listening, Tracey Reid. By the way, I visit Venice AT LEAST once a year….
